The Praeclarus Press has written an accolade to doulas for the wonderful work they do to keep birth normal and to assist and advocate for mothers before, during, and after birth.  As it states in the article, “doulas are part of the framework that comprises the midwifery model of care, which views birth as a normal, not pathological event, and where the rates of interventions, such as epidurals and cesarean sections, tend to be lower. Midwifery care is not available to the majority of American women, but hiring a doula can provide many of the same advantages, especially at a time when the rates of cesarean sections are at an all-time high.”

It is inexcusable that midwifery care is not available to the majority of American women, but it is a fact.  Until that changes (and midwives are working hard to change it), doulas are a mother’s best bet for a normal, physiological labor and birth, a good start to breastfeeding, and a belief that, no matter how the experience turned out, it was as good as it could possibly be.  In fact, the optimal birth experience would include both a midwife and a doula!  Their roles are different, but their philosophies are aligned.  Here’s to the doula, who is always there to support mothers when they need her!
